Eating Healthy Without Breaking The Bank!

If you are like me you try your hardest to eat non-GMO, organic, and affordably. Or you could be one of those people that avoids the former because that would mean that the latter is obsolete. Well I hate to be the one to break it to you (not really!) but that is not entirely true, you can get non-GMO, organic foods without breaking the bank. All it takes is a little extra prep work before shopping, below are my suggestions!

Look at Weekly Ads
This is now easier than ever considering that almost every store offers an online ad it is so easy to look at stores weekly ads, this makes it easy to look at ads when you have a little extra time. See what organic and non-GMO foods are on sale and if you see a favorite brand of yours on sale, look it up! You might be surprised, there is no reason you should be going over budget to buy something different when your old brand is the same or similar. And in a lot of cases if organic is insanely expensive I will just get conventional but I will still make sure that it is non-GMO [also, refer to my last tip for this].
Weekly Ads modernized
There are apps now that consolidate store deals and weekly ads, my favorite one is shopular.

Coupon, Coupon, Coupon!
Don't ignore the power of couponing, now I'm not saying that you need to do couponing worthy of a spot on Extreme Couponer's but it definitely does save you money if you do it right. I like to start by first looking at the deals in store then I look for coupons in the newspaper, on the internet, and through store apps and websites. This allows you to save even more money by using coupons on top of weekly sales. In addition to searching for coupons look for brands that send out samples, they will often include a coupon with them.
Loyalty Cards
Don't forget to sign up for your grocery stores loyalty cards, not only will you get more deals but a lot of stores have coupons on their websites that can be clipped directly to your loyalty card.

Look In The Clearance Area
I know that not every grocery store has this but there are some that do, I would advise you to look around while shopping and see if you can spot one. You never know until you go on the hunt and clearance plus coupons often lead to mega savings!

Head Straight To The Bulk Bin
Literally ever since I was a little girl I would look over at the bulk bin at the grocery store but never actually go to the area, I don't know, maybe it appeared as some magical space. Who knows? But it wasn't until maybe a couple of years ago when I saw a YouTube video that I thought maybe I should give the bulk bin a try. And oh the deals I've found! You would be amazed at what you can find at the bulk bin and the prices. There is just about everything at the bulk bin, from beans, to grains, dried fruits, nuts, it also gives you the chance to try news things without wasting your money on a full sized package.

Leave No Stone Unturned
Might sound a bit extreme but by that I really mean look in places that you think would absolutely not have what you want. I cannot tell you how many times I have been in the Dollar Tree or Big Lots and found something that was not only name brand but non-GMO and organic as well, and don’t forget, you can use coupons at the Dollar Tree as well!

Look Online
There are some products that just cannot be found affordably in store, no matter what tips you use and for items like that I look online. You would be amazed at what you can find online and the best part is the fact that you can have it shipped to you!

The Debate On Non-GMO and Organic Foods
There has been some debate about whether we need to even avoid genetically modified foods and foods produced using pesticides, some feel like there is not enough evidence about either. But my own personal take on this is that I do not want to be sitting around 10 or 20 years from now and some ground breaking evidence is released that definitively says that [some] conventional and genetically modified foods are harmful to our health. I would much rather error on the side of caution, I know that this may not be an option for everyone, and everything I eat is most certainly not organic. But I try to incorporate as much non-GMO and organic foods in my diet as possible, ultimately you have to make that decision for yourself. If you feel this whole thing of organic eating is garbage, that is fine but I still encourage you to eat as healthily as you possibly can!

Good Health, Peace, & Love,
Erika
